Background information

Initially celebrated on January 23, the day the Grand Duchess, Joséphine Charlotte was born (and who governed between 1919 and 1964), the Luxembourg National Day was postponed to June 23 (more summery weather) in 1962.

There are four major events that are real highlights of the day:

  • A "Te Deum" in the Notre-Dame cathedral in Luxembourg,

  • 101 canon shots from the Fetschenhaff,

  • A military parade,

  • An official ceremony organized in the Grand Theater of Luxembourg city (since 2014).

The festivities commence on June 22.  The Grand Ducal family is welcomed at the city hall of Luxembourg and will then attend a concert of military music, followed by a torch-lit procession by the town's associations and fireworks. The rock, pop and folk concerts will liven up the streets, bars and cafés in the country.
